Wearing Open Rings

Open-back rings work because metal bends. That's also the limit: every bend uses up a little of it. Adjust it a few times gently and it'll hold its shape for years. Crank it back and forth and the metal fatigues at the same spot every time — that's where a band eventually cracks, and on plated pieces it's also where the finish goes first. Avoid catching them on clothes, hair, pockets, bags or other objects.

Silver reacts with sulfur in air, skin and everyday products. That reaction is what tarnish is, and it happens to all silver eventually — faster in humid places, faster if you sweat a lot, faster if the ring lives on a bathroom shelf.
